Dr. Rahman and his team were selected for a National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps cohort. The team was awarded $50,000 from the NSF to develop a robotic assistive arm for disabled individuals. The team includes Rathindra (Babu) DasGupta, senior scientist, Fidel Sierra-Flores Jr., undergraduate student in Biomedical Engineering, and Md AssadUzZaman, doctoral student in Mechanical Engineering.

Team “Rehab Glove” from UWM BioRobotics Lab successfully completed NSF I-Corps winter 2018 cohort with a “GO” held in Milwaukee I-Corps site. The team comprised of Lab’s director Dr. Mohammad Rahman as Academic Lead (AL), two PhD students Md Rasedul Islam and Md Assad-Uz-Zaman as Entrepreneurial Lead (EL), and Mentor Scott Johannes, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Medical College of Wisconsin and CEO, Immersive Innovation LLC.

The Milwaukee I-Corps Program is a joint project of the academic institutions in the Milwaukee region to accelerate ideas using the proven I-Corps methodology. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps Program and counts as a mini grant from the NSF as each I-Corps Team receives a $2,400 sub-award. The program consists of a five-week workshop where participants are coached on designing and validating a business model around their idea. The last session will be dedicated to team presentations on lessons learned and a closing reception. Upon completion, each team will have to decide whether to proceed with the idea or stop and regroup.

Md Assad-Uz-Zaman has been successfully completed his masters graduation. He has designed and developed a Robot Guided Rehabilitation Scheme for Upper Extremity Rehabilitation using NAO Robot. Congratulation Assad!

Christopher Spiewak has presented in “Posters in the Rotunda“. One of six UWM undergraduates selected to present research at the Posters in the Rotunda event in Madison. With more than 100 students from the UW-System, along with their faculty advisors, go to the Capitol Rotunda to share their undergraduate research with legislators, state leaders, UW alumni, and other supporters.

ME Junior Christopher Spiewak has been awarded “Senior Excellence in Research Award” for fall 2016-Spring 2017. Those who receive the award have exhibited an exceptional commitment to undergraduate research during their time at UWM. Recipients are expected to represent the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) at campus and local events. As well as meet monthly with OUR Associate Director to discuss research progress and professional development opportunities. Finishing with a delivered address on the outcomes of the research project at the Senior Excellence in Research Colloquium.

ME Junior Christopher Spiewak has been a “Support for Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF)” for fall 2015.  SURF enables faculty research mentors to co-apply with top-performing students to provide an hourly wage for the student’s work on a faculty-led research project. SURF allowed for the continuation of our research into the design, development, and control of a robotic assistive device for hand rehabilitation.

ME Junior Christopher Spiewak has been accepted in “Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program” for summer 2015.  Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through the involvement in research, and other academic activities.The research that he conducted was a design project. Designing a robotic assistive device for hand rehabilitation of physically disabled individuals with impaired upper-limb motion due to stroke, cardiovascular diseases, spinal cord injuries, trauma, work injuries etc.
