Publishing & Promoting Your First Book

With Author and former Furrow editor, Emily Jon Tobias

These days, most poets and short story writers rely on small, independent presses for publication. While small presses play a vital role in publishing outstanding, cutting-edge literature, they often run on small budgets, which means authors have to be proactive and creative in garnering publicity for their work. In this talk, author and UWM alumna Emily Jon Tobias will discuss the winding path her award-winning book, Monarch, took to publication with the esteemed Black Lawrence Press. She will offer candid advice and take questions about the steps she took to promote her work, garner blurbs and reviews, and organize a nationwide book tour.  The talk is free and open to the public, so feel free to spread the word. Emily’s a really dynamic speaker, a beloved alumn, and her path to publication is really interesting and complex. She’s a straight-shooter with loads of great advice, and maybe she’ll even tell us how she got such big names to blurb her!  We’d love to see you there, and stay tuned for an updated announcement including links to the virtual live feed and recording for the event.

Emily Jon Tobias will also be reading and in conversation with Valerie Laken at Boswell Books at 6:30 pm Tuesday Sept. 17.
