Junior Sarah Philippi was awarded a 2018-2019 Senior Excellence in Research Award by the Office of Undergraduate Research to support her senior thesis research next academic year! Sarah will be studying how sex, estradiol, and APOE genotype affect neural structure and function in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. Congratulations to Sarah!
Dr. Frick is the Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year
Dr. Frick was awarded the Office of Undergraduate Research’s 2018 Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year. The award was announced at OUR’s 10th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, featuring presentations by hundreds of UWM undergraduates. Dr. Frick is very grateful to all of her undergraduate research assistants and to the graduate students and postdocs who work with them every day!
Lisa Taxier wins inaugural 3MT competition
Graduate student Lisa Taxier was named the winner of
UWM’s inaugural Three Minute Thesis competition! This competition encourages students to effectively explain their graduate research projects in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The competition drew nearly 100 students and the 14 finalists presented yesterday. Lisa’s 3MT talk explained our Alzheimer’s Association-funded project to study how sex, estrogens, and a particular genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s interact to affect memory. Sarah Beamish and Aaron Fleischer to join the lab in summer 2018
The Frick lab is delighted to welcome Sarah Beamish and Aaron Fleischer as incoming graduate students in the summer of 2018! Sarah is finishing her B.S. in Neuroscience at the University of Delaware, and Aaron is completing his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry at the University of South Dakota. Jaekyoon Kim wins 2018 OSSD travel award
Graduate student Jaekyoon Kim has been awarded a 2018 travel award to attend the upcoming Organization for the Study of Sex Differences conference in Atlanta, GA. Jaekyoon will be presenting his work on the cell signaling mechanisms underlying estrogenic regulation of dendritic spine density. Congratulations Jaekyoon!
Lisa Taxier and Wendy Koss win 2017 SfN travel awards
Graduate student Lisa Taxier and postdoctoral fellow Dr. Wendy Koss were awarded Society for Neuroscience Trainee Professional Development Awards to attend the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington, DC in November, 2017. Both presented their posters at a special poster session for awardees in addition to the regular poster sessions. Congratulations Lisa and Wendy!
Dr. Frick awarded UWM Research Foundation Senior Faculty Research Award
On Oct. 11, 2017, Dr. Frick was awarded one of four 
UWM Research Foundation Senior Faculty Research Awards for Excellence in Research. Dr. Frick received the award at the annual university awards ceremony that celebrates achievement by faculty and staff in research, teaching, and service.
The Frick lab walks for Alzheimer’s Disease
On Sept. 17, 2017, the Frick lab and friends participated in our first ever Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The Milwaukee walk is the 10th largest in the country, and passes through the scenic Lakeshore State Park on the Milwaukee Harbor. Our team, called Arlene’s Alzheimer’s Army, walked to support research, caregivers, and patients, including Dr. Frick’s Aunt Arlene, who is valiantly battling late-stage Alzheimer’s.
Jaekyoon Kim publishes new paper
Jaekyoon Kim, a senior graduate student in the lab, is the first author on a recently published paper in Psychoneuroendocrinology entitled, “Distinct effects of estrogen receptor antagonism on object recognition and spatial memory consolidation in ovariectomized mice”. Jaekyoon’s studies indicate that ERα antagonism impairs spatial, but not object recognition, memory consolidation in ovariectomized mice, whereas ERβ antagonism impairs both types of memory at the doses tested. These data suggest that ERα and ERβ are necessary for OP memory consolidation, but that only ERβ is necessary for OR memory consolidation, in ovariectomized mice.
