EE 362: Electric Machinery (Each Semester)

Course Description: An introduction to electro-mechanical energy conversion, magnetic circuits, 3-phase circuits, single phase and three phase transformers, DC motors and generators including separately excited, shunt, series and compound, induction machines, synchronous machines. Lab experiments are based on the lectures given.

EE 572: Power Electronics

Course Description: This course provides a basic overview of power electronic devices and circuits. The fundamental of AC/DC rectifiers, DC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters, and AC/AC sycloconverters are discussed. Introductory analysis of power electronic systems such as uninterruptible power supplies and active filters are also provided. The basics of digital control for power electronic systems using digital signal processors (DSP) are explained. Circuit analysis software such as Pspice, PSIM, and MATLAB are used for system design and simulation.

EE 575: Analysis of Electric Machines and Motor Drives (Each Fall Semester)

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to discuss the fundamentals of advanced electric machines and motor drives. Electric motor drives have growing applications in industry automation, robotics, automotive and traction systems, home appliances, aerospace, and etc. Different drive systems for conventional and advanced machines are presented in this course. Selection of motors and drives, calculating the ratings, speed control, position control, starting, and braking are also covered. Drives for DC machines, induction motors, brushless DC, switched reluctance, and stepper motors are explained. Simulation projects using PSIM and MATALB are parts of course assignments.

EE 781: Advanced Synchronous Machinery

Course Description: Fundamentals of electric machines, basic principles of variable speed controls, field orientation theory, direct torque control, vector control of AC drives, induction machines, switched reluctance and synchronous reluctance motors, permanent magnet brushless DC drives, converter topologies of DC and AC drives, and sensorless operation.


Advanced Power Electronics

Course Description: This course provides a basic overview of power electronic devices and circuits. State space and generalized state space averaging techniques are explained. Power electronics systems such as uninterruptible power supplies and active filters are also discussed. The basics of digital control for power electronic systems using digital signal processors (DSP) are explained. Circuit analysis software such as Pspice, PSIM, and Matlab are used for system design and simulation.

Renewable Energy Systems

Course Description: This course is the entry level course for undergraduate and graduate students on renewable energy. The purpose of this course is to provide the students the fundamental knowledge on renewable energy. In this course, the energy content and characteristics of three renewable energy sources namely solar, wind and biomass are discussed. The energy conversion circuitry, grid integration, and energy storage utilization will also be discussed. The materials for course grading include one midterm exam, final exam, homework and term project.

Controls for Renewable Energy Systems

Course Description: This course is an advanced level course mainly for graduate students on how to control and integrate renewable energy. The purpose of this course is to provide in-depth and specific knowledge on above outlines. The main focus is on solar and wind energy integration into the utility grid. The materials for course grading include one midterm exam, final exam, homework (including simulation mini-projects) and term project.
