Shideh Yavary Mehr’s Homepage

Ever-changing. Ever-expanding.
Knowledge is the most significant power that humans possess.
If you can believe it, your mind can achieve it.

Shideh Yavary received her Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in 2022. She is currently an Assistant Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). She was the network administrator of the Ministry of Road and Transportation (MRT), Tehran, Iran, from 1999 to 2007.  At MRT, she was instrumental in leading the networking and wireless operations and responsible for design, development, consulting, and training services in 4G/LTE and multi-gigabit wireless technologies.

Her research philosophy is grounded in the fact that application-centric networks resulting from seamless collaboration between the application layer and network layer have a marked impact on network management, security, policy frameworks, network services, and big data analytics. Importantly, she focuses on cross-layer approaches to optimize and secure networks rather than layer-3 approaches that are unaware of the applications’ service and resource requirements. Thus, her research seeks to uncover application-aware networking and its impact on security, service differentiation, and efficient data transfers in distributed data-intensive applications.

Among her other accolades, she was the recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award the 2019, 2020, and 2022; UNL. Also, she won first place at a math competition in 1996.
She has served as a reviewer for leading conferences such as IEEE/ANTS proceeding on Networking, Computer Networks, and Metropolitan Local Area Networks. She is currently a TPC member of the IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS).

Prof. Yavary was the recipient of the 2022 IEEE ANTS Best Paper award, and of the 2019 IEEE ACM, CoNext the best poster award, and she was a fellow of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program at UNL. Her research interests are computer networks, software-defined optical networks, network functions virtualization, cloud-native infrastructure, AI/ML applications for networking, and network security.

Her Research Interests are in:

  • SDN and Programmable Networks
  • SDON; Optical Network
  • Network Security
  • Network Virtualization
