Annika Gogan and Jessica Rudolph, “The Future of International Accounting Curriculum in the United States”
Mentor: Laura Swenson, Business
Accounting faculty are responsible for both preparing students to pass the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exams and creating competent, well-rounded accounting professionals. With the recent re-write of the CPA exams in 2021, international accounting has been completely removed from the exams. This project aims to determine whether to continue to include international accounting concepts in the accounting curriculum and if so, to what depth. We will employ two research methodologies: sending field surveys and hand-collecting data from accredited accounting programs. The surveys, sent to practicing accounting professionals, will gather their opinions about the importance of entry-level international accounting knowledge. In addition, we will hand-collect International Accounting syllabi from accredited accounting programs across the US, to gain a better understanding of how well accounting programs already cover this topic. This project’s results will highlight the importance of teaching international accounting at the collegiate level, and in turn, inform practitioners what to expect of accounting graduates.
Very clear presentation. I like how you shared the talking points of your presentation. This format worked well.
This is a very relevant study considering the recent changes to the CPA exam. The findings and suggestions for future work have the potential to make a big impact on accounting programs as well as hiring practices.
You have taken a lot of consideration to prepare your work for a general audience. For example, your presentation provides listeners with a solid overview of the accounting program and does not assume that background.
Well done!
Thank you for the kind words! Let us know if you have any questions.

Very well put together presentation! You did an excellent job of presenting very text-based information in an engaging way.
How many universities have international accounting courses? Was 22 universities a large proportion of the universities that offer international accounting?
Hi! Thanks for the question. We reached out to over 150 schools with AACSB accredited universities via email asking if they have an International Accounting course and if they could share the syllabus with us. Only 22 universities responded with their syllabi, another 20 responded saying they do not have a specific International Accounting course. We are unsure how representative this is of the entire US, but this is the data we were able to collect. Let us know if you have any additonal questions.
