Prospective Graduate Students

Are you taking a student?

Yes! I am planning to accept a new graduate student for Fall 2024. Our application deadline is 12/1/23.

What research is happening in your lab? What will you focus on in the next few years?

My laboratory focuses on alcohol-related intimate partner violence and sexual assault, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ and underrepresented populations. Details about our ongoing studies can be found here. Information on recent publications from my lab can be found here.  Over the next few years, the research in the lab will continue to focus on these same areas.

What is your mentorship style?

Each student is unique; thus, I take an individualized approach to mentorship. I try to meet each student where they are and help achieve their individual career goals. This necessitates a developmental approach, too, where I assume students need more one-on-one attention in the early years of their training, with more independence over time.

Do you like applicants to contact you over email before applying? Do you meet applicants before submitting the application? Do you review and provide feedback on application materials?

While I deeply appreciate your interest in my lab’s work and the time you take out to review my research, emailing me prior to the submission of your application in no way affects the review of your application. Due to the substantial number of applications that I receive each year, I am unable to provide an individualized response to each applicant or review any materials that are not officially submitted as part of the application. To be fair to all prospective graduate students, I do not set up individual meetings with applicants prior to our application deadline. Each year I invite 3-4 applicants to our official interview day, which is in late January. Our application deadline is 1st December each year. Application procedures can be found here

What careers have your former Graduate students chosen?

Former graduate students have typically chosen careers in research and/or clinical settings. Information about current and former lab members can be found here.

What does working in your lab look like?

Everyone in the lab works on team projects together, as well as independent papers/presentations. There are also opportunities to collaborate with people inside and outside the department.

Prospective Postbac Scholars

Are you currently hiring a Postbac Scholar?

While we do not have any immediate openings, candidates are welcome to share their CVs to shorey-lab@uwm.edu for inquiries. New openings will be advertised on this website.

What is your mentorship style

I take an individualized approach to mentorship to meet each trainee where they are and help them achieve their individual career goals. For Postbac Scholars, this often means mentoring them to achieve their immediate career goals, which typically involves familiarizing them to the diverse responsibilities of a research lab, helping them in choosing suitable career trajectories and supporting them in pursuing graduate studies.

What careers have your former Postbac Scholars chosen?

Former Postbac Scholars have typically pursued graduate programs in Clinical or Counseling Psychology or have chosen careers in other research-oriented fields. Information about current and former lab members can be found here.

Do Postbac Scholars have opportunities for publications and conference presentations?

Yes. Postbac Scholars are encouraged to develop their own projects or get involved in ongoing projects for publications and presentations.

What does working in your lab look like?

Postbac Scholars are typically involved in participant recruitment, data collection, database management, and data analysis, among other responsibilities. They may collaborate on team projects and develop independent papers/presentations.
