About

Studying sport and performance psychology at UWM prepares you to work with various performers (e.g., sports, performing arts, military) to develop and use various mental, life, and self-regulatory skills with the goal of optimizing performance, enjoyment, and personal development. If you are already a practicing healthcare professional, sport coach, or other related practitioner (e.g., performance manager), a degree in sport and performance psychology can enhance your existing professional skills when working with performers of various levels.

Depending on your chosen sport and performance psychology program, it can prepare you for a path to

  • a graduate professional degree program
  • advanced research-based graduate studies
  • a career in academia, such as an educator and/or a researcher
  • becoming an AASP Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) in the United States and Canada

For more information on typical educational and licensure/certification requirements in the United States, see Paths to a Career in Sport and Performance Psychology.

Depending on your career goals, the sport and performance psychology curriculum can be tailored to meet your unique needs. While all programs include specialized knowledge in the eight knowledge areas (K1–K8) identified by AASP, your program can be tailored towards areas of importance for your future career (e.g., teaching, research, applied practice).
