The 39th Annual Conference of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from October 23 to 26, 2024, attracting participants from around the world. This conference drew the largest number of attendees in AASP’s history. Throughout four days, students, faculty, and alumni of the Sport and Performance Psychology Laboratory delivered presentations and posters.
SPP laboratory Alumnus Dr. Carly Wahl and faculty Dr. Barbara Meyer presented a workshop titled Optimizing Firefighter Recovery: Utilizing the Firefighter-Adapted Assessment of Recovery Activities for Athletes in Research and Practice. Workshop attendees learned how to (a) implement the ARAA-FF within the firefighter population, (b) score items and interpret results of the ARAA-FF, and (c) develop a potential intervention plan tailored to enhance individual firefighter recovery.
During the conference, doctoral candidate Derek Zike took on the role of access coordinator. He was present on-site to help with any questions or requests related to accessibility. This marked the inaugural year for this position at the conference. This position was created as part of initiatives co-led by the AASP Advocacy Committee and the Conference Planning Committee to increase accessibility at the conference and ensure that all who wish to attend could participate fully.
The LSPPE was well represented at the conference’s Graduate Program & Career Fair. Faculty members Dr. Meyer and Dr. Monna Arvinen-Barrow, as well as doctoral student Landon Braun and doctoral candidates Anthony Magdaleno, and Derek Zike, were all on hand to discuss the SPP laboratory graduate educational offerings with anyone who wanted to know more about sport and performance psychology at UWM.
The AASP conference is also famous for its high-quality poster presentations. Fascinating posters were presented, and SPP laboratory students, faculty, and alumni contributed to the posters on hand.
