The Laboratory for Sport Psychology and Performance Excellence (LSPPE) is excited to announce the release of a new report written by lab alumnus Dr. William Massey and supported by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The report showcases the positive impact of sport participation on girls’ mental health. The research analyzes the relationship between girls’ involvement in sports and their mental health. The findings present compelling evidence that participating in high-quality sports activities can help alleviate depression and anxiety, boost peer relationships, and provide a sense of purpose and meaning.
This study not only identifies the key factors within the sport setting that drive these positive outcomes, such as levels of autonomy and coach relationships, but also underscores the unique qualities of sport compared to other extracurricular activities. The report goes beyond academic findings, providing practical policy and practice recommendations that demonstrate how these insights can be effectively applied in the field, empowering policymakers, educators, and sports organizations to make a tangible difference in girls’ mental health through sport.
