  1. (Optional) If you would like to recover up to 4 of the points you missed in Exam 1, choose 1 opr 2 problems on the exam and write a short reflective paragraph on each one, explaining what your misconception on that problem was, and what you will work on to avoid the resulting error in future exams. Hand your reflections next Tuesday. Each misconception description, and each error-correction strategy, will earn you one point. Due 06/18.
  2. Read Section 3.3 for discussion in Wednesday’s class. This section is largely a summary of techniques we have already covered. We will also look at examples from Section 3.5 on Wednesday, so you should also look ahead briefly to that section.

  2. Read Section 3.1 for discussion in class on Monday.
06/05
  1. Review the material we have covered in Chapters 1 and 2, and come to class on Thursday with a list of questions you would like to have answered, and/or topics you would like to review before Monday’s exam. You may find this list of topics and sample exercises helpful.

(Note that since you would not get feedback before the exam anyway, there are no exercises to be handed in tomorrow. Be sure you have made an attempt at numbers 42 and 72, however, and we will discuss them in class if necessary.)
06/04
  1. Review the section on Composition of Functions (pages 6-11) carefully, in preparation for our discussion of the Chain Rule on Wednesday. As a check of your understanding, complete Exercises 1.1: 43, 47, 51, 53, and 55. (We will also discuss some or all of these exercises on Wednesday, but make sure you try them yourself first.)
  2. (Optional) Read Section 2.4 for discussion on Tuesday. This section introduces our last important shortcut for computing derivatives: the Chain Rule, which is the shortcut for differentiating composite functions. As with Section 2.3, though, you do not have to read this section: only if you feel it will help you to follow the class discussion.
  3. Complete Exercises 2.3: 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 15, 17, 19, 23, 25, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 50 (see page 6 for definitions), 53, 55, 57, 63, 67.
  4. Hand in Exercises 2.3: 14, 50. Due 06/05.
06/03
  1. (Optional) Read Section 2.3 for discussion on Tuesday. The big ideas in this section are two new shortcuts for finding derivatives: the product rule and the quotient rule, but for once you are possibly better off not reading the section before our class discussion, so you don’t have to read it unless you feel it will be helpful to you.
  2. Complete Exercises 2.5: 1, 3, 7, 9, 11, 17, 20, 23, 25, 28.
  3. Hand in Exercises 2.5: 20, 28. Due 06/04.
05/30
  1. Read Section 2.5 for discussion on Monday. (We will come back to look at Sections 2.3 and 2.4, but they are not necessary for 2.5, which is a nice application section.) As always, try to pick out the bigger points in the section, even if you don’t follow every detail; in this section, the essential idea is that the tangent line is a good approximation to the graph of a function close to the point of tangency, and so you can approximate nearby values of the function by the values on the tangent line.
  2. Complete Exercises 2.1: 25, 27, 31, 58, 59, 61.
  3. Complete Exercises 2.2: 5, 9, 11, 17, 19, 29, 31, 39, 40, 43, 45, 47, 49, 51, 53, 57, 59, 60, 62, 63, 65, 71, 73, 75.
  4. Hand in Exercises 2.2: 40, 60. Due 06/03.
  5. In this first week, we have covered all the essential foundational ideas of differential calculus; everything else in Chapters 2 through 4 is elaboration or application of these ideas. Take some time to review everything we have covered this week, and come to class on Monday ready with questions on anything you would lke to review or discuss further.
05/29
  1. Read Section 2.2 for discussion on Thursday. As always, try to pick out the bigger points in the section, even if you don’t follow every detail: we will work through some typical problems in class tomorrow, but you will be better prepared for that work if you have tried to make sense of the section first.
  2. Complete Exercises 2.1: 5, 7, 15, 17, 20, 23, 37, 42, 45, 49, 51, 55.
  3. Hand in Exercises 2.1: 20, 42. Due 05/30.
05/28
  1. Complete the tedious but necessary class administrative tasks:
    1. Access the class website, and read the syllabus.
    2. Make sure you will receive any class e-mails in a timely fashion. These will be sent to your UWM e-mail address, so if you don’t check that account on a daily basis, set your preferences so that the mail is forwarded to you preferred account.
    3. Arrange to have a copy of the textbook, or copy necessary pages from the reserve copy in the Golda Meir Library.
    4. Contact me with any questions.
  2. Review Chapter 1 quickly, especially the material in Sections 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3, and see me if any of it is not familiar to you.
  3. Read Section 2.1 for discussion on Wednesday. (Tomorrow!) Try to pick out the bigger points in the section, even if you don’t follow every detail: we will work through some typical problems in class tomorrow, but you will be better prepared for that work if you have tried to make sense of the section first.
  4. Complete Exercises 1.1: 5, 11, 13, 19, 21, 25, 29, 31, 33, 36, 37, 43, 48, 59 (definitions are on page 6), 67, 69, 75.
  5. Complete Exercises 1.3: 3, 5, 7, 11, 21, 23, 28, 37, 41, 45, 51, 55.
  6. Hand in Exercises 1.1: 36; Exercises 1.3: 28. Due 05/29.
