The following education, outreach, and training (EOT) program will be implemented with a focus on educating the next generation of engineers:
- The experimental and simulation results obtained in this study will serve as an excellent source for students enrolled in Dr. Zhao’s Advanced Concrete Design (Spring 09) at UWM, and Dr Shahrooz’s Structural Dynamics II (Spring 08) at UC.
- The general public and policy makers will be exposed to engineering research using NEES through an annual engineering open house and the ASCE student chapter outreach programs both at UWM and UC.
- The research team will create research opportunities (e.g., implementation of virtual laboratory experiments) for students from underrepresented groups enrolled in WiscAMP’s Undergraduate Research Collaborative (URC) and Sophomore Research Experience (SRE) programs (led by Douglas Harder). Underrepresented undergraduates will be recruited from the University of Cincinnati Minority Engineering Program: Emerging Ethnic Engineers Program (E3).
- The research team will help develop professional seminars for the program to transfer engineering research to secondary school technology teachers and to encourage K-12 students and teachers to explore new areas in engineering.

- Alice Muehlbauer (UWM)
Alice is a student enrolled in the WiscAMP program. Her resume is attached
- Aquilino O. Dael Jr., IV (UWM)
Aquilino (Ken) is a civil engineering student, who is interested in graduate school. Ken’s involvement in the project is funded by the Undergraduate Research Assistantship by the College of Engineering and Applied Science(CEAS) at UWM. His study will be presented in a poster session hosted by CEAS and/or the UWM campus in Spring 2009.
- Chadd Ross Lane (UWM)
Chadd is a student enrolled in the WiscAMP program. His summer 2010 research led to this report and a presentation. |

- Spring 2009 Openhouse at UWM, April 4, 2009
Kenneth and Dr. Zhao participated in the Spring 2009 College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Openhouse at UWM. Dr. Zhao introduced NEESR research and education oppurtunities at UWM to about fifteen high-school students and their parents. Kenneth presented the NEES anchor project and his project component – Using MathCAD to calculate the anchor capacities per ACI318-08 Appendix D.
- PLTW Discovers STEM at UWM, March 13, 2009
Derek and Dr. Zhao participated in the first Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Discovers STEM @ UWM event. Dr. Zhao introduced research and education oppurtunities at UWM Civil Engineering program to about forty high-school students . Derek explained the NEES anchor project and laboratory testing.
- K-12 Outreach at the Younger Members Group of ASCE, April 11, 2008
Dr. Zhao visited a group of 1st – 3rd graders on April 11, 2008 at Fernwood Elementary school with three other members of the Younger Members Group of ASCE-Wisconsin. Students made domes with gumdrops and toothpicks, and learnt about engineering, civil engineering, and structural engineering.
