The purpose of this study is to identify the walking gait dysfunction in young adult females with Chronic Ankle Instability.
Who can participate?
- Females
- Ages 18 – 44
- No significant lower limb swelling
- No history of major back or lower limb (hip, knee, ankle, foot) surgery
- No lower back or lower limb injury (other than ankle sprain for chronic ankle instability group) that resulted in at least one interrupted day of normal physical activity within the last 6 months
- No medications that may cause dizziness or impair the ability to walk
- Participants must not be pregnant
Chronic Ankle Instability Participants
- History of an initial lateral ankle sprain (injury to the outside of the ankle) at least 12 months ago that resulted in at least one interrupted day of normal physical activity
- History of re-spraining the ankle, feeling of ankle instability, and/or feeling of the ankle joint “giving way” within the last 6 months
Uninjured Participants
- No history of ankle sprain that resulted in at least one interrupted day of normal physical activity
What will I do?: (1 ≈ 2.45 h visit)
- Screening Form: Phone or Microsoft FORM assessment (≈ 10 min)
- Questions about the study inclusion and exclusion criteria
- Lab Visit: Preliminary Procedures and Gait Assessment (≈ 2.45 h)
- General health and lower body pain history questionnaire
- Height and weight measurement
- Ankle range of motion and lower body (hip, knee, ankle, foot) muscle strength testing
- Level ground walking gait trials while barefoot, wearing a minimalist sandal, and wearing your own athletic shoes
