Journeys in Spirited Landscapes

Exhibited at the UWM Union Art Gallery Sept 18-Oct 11, 2008

My “spirited” landscapes vary in their emotive force. I create quiet and contemplative work using traditional media with traditional techniques. My more forceful works combine a variety of textures, incorporate many different materials, and use multiple techniques of pigment application to the various surfaces. I use multiple textures to create a vibrant visual surface. My use of multiple materials reinforces the surface richness by creating multiple layers of surfaces to increase the depth of the visual field. These approaches are integrated by various pigment application techniques that unify the multiple surfaces and materials into a cohesive interpretive work. Some of my “paintings” may be better described as “constructions.” As “constructions,” these works celebrate the creative forces behind ancestral landscapes.

I extend thanks to Shannon Dosemagen and the Union Gallery for assistance with the exhibit, and for some of the photos archived here.
