My Maliseet “spirited” landscapes emphasize the primordial connections between the Maliseet language, culture, and oral traditions. They are organized by a symbolic representation of the Maliseet prayer of Thanksgiving. Through the prayer, the Maliseet landscape becomes animated with the spirit of ancestral places. In this current era of “progress” the Maliseet language, culture, and oral traditions have been continuously undermined and are now on the verge of extinction. I produce these landscapes so that we may never forget how we came from this earth and how we are important participants in not only a “spirited” landscape, but a spiritual landscape as well.
