Welcome to a special e-learning module for Earth Day!

Please join us in celebrating and take part in some fun activities. We may not be able to celebrate or take action as we have done in previous years, but we can still do something while staying safe and healthy. Please participate and explore our shared resources!

Earth Day is traditionally celebrated on April 22nd each year and this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the global movement! Earth Day was originally founded as a day dedicated to educating people about the issues challenging our environment. Nearly 20 million Americans participated on the first Earth Day in 1970! Then organizers included Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin, who proposed that a day be designated between college and university Spring Break and exam weeks when a large number of college students could be engaged in a “teach-in” to learn about the impact of pollution and pesticides in rivers, on farms and farmworkers, on wildlife and in the environment.

In the years following the initial Earth Day, numerous policies to protect water and air quality took shape across the United States. The US saw the development of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act and Americans began to demonstrate a growing awareness of organic foods and produce and of alternative energies and “greener” energy-saving choices at home. Today, Earth Day is celebrated globally and numerous environmental organizations dedicate the month of April to environmental awareness and action.

Currently, earthday.org counts over “1 billion individuals mobilized for the future of the planet.” You can join them! In the spirit of Earth Day 2020 and “Youth In Action”, we invite you to check out the activities and links here on our page, join virtual Earth Day celebrations and activities, and take action in your home and community to make a difference. Doing a trash pick-up while socially distancing close to home around your block is easy. Tackling a recycling project or launching steps to save water in your household can be done while staying Safer at Home. Stay connected with us by sharing a picture of your personal Earth Day actions! Visit the e-learning link here on our “Youth In Action” site to explore your Leadership potential and to engage it to take action on the part of the environment!
