The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is one of the most important documents to be created within the last century. Because of the UDHR, we as human beings, know our rights. Within the UDHR, there are 30 articles ranging from “right to equality” to “right to education”. Even though some of the Articles may seem easy to understand, others can be confusing upon first glance. How can we try to understand what each of these Articles means, especially in today’s world?
Our programming with Urban Underground this past summer allowed us to gain a deeper meaning of the Articles by having the 16 students create hashtags based on Articles of their choosing. The catch was that they could not just use one word or direct phrasing from the Article itself. For example, if they picked Article 1 which is “right to equality” they could not do #equality. They instead could put, #EqualityForAll. Just as we asked them to think about issues that they were passionate about, we asked them to channel that passion when learning about the UDHR Articles. The group created 15 hashtags for 10 different Articles.
