WisCUR Executive Committee Meeting, December 14, 2020

Attending: Cherie Barta, Catherine Chan, Scott Cooper, Nigel Rothfels, Julie O’Leary, Lissa Schneider-Rebozo and Jalal Nawash.

  1. Campus check-in – Many campuses have cancelled or postponed spring break: Madison, Eau Claire, River Falls, and LaCrosse have cancelled; Whitewater and Superior have moved theirs later in April. Some campuses have also delayed the start of spring semester classes.
  2. UW System Symposium update – Since the last meeting the date for the UW-System Symposium has been moved to Wednesday, April 28th to accommodate UW-Whitewater’s change in spring break dates. Jalal Nawash has contacted System about the $5,000 that has been provided in the past but has not had a response yet. It may be helpful to send a letter from WisCUR if needed. The per student registration fee will depend on whether or not System makes its contribution. Anticipated fee will be $30 per student with their contribution, and $55 without it. Whitewater incurred $13,000 in expenses last year and did not receive any support from System. In the past, campuses have each contributed $1,000 which is processed as an IUJ, but where the money passes through in the System is unclear. We don’t believe campuses paid this last year, but UR directors are asked to check on their campus. Julie shared a communication from her campus that others can refer to. (attached).
  3. Scheduled discussion with David Specht-Boardman about communicating UR to legislature – Since the last meeting, David notified us of the decision to cancel Research in the Rotunda for 2021. Julie O’Leary scheduled a call this week with David to talk about other ideas for sharing information about undergraduate research with the legislature and solicited input from the group. Points raised:
    • What we share depends on the audience – stories if it is legislators, numbers if it is a budge- oriented group
    • The interaction between students and legislators is valuable; we may still want to identify students to share their work and help them put together a package for legislators
    • What is David prepared to do and how can we support that?
  4. CUR support for remote URSCA – Karen Havholm was unable to join the call but shared that CUR is trying hard to use its resources to support URSCA remotely/online.  As a board member she can move forward suggestions or people can make them through their Divisions or direct to the CUR office. Topics suggested by the group included best practices for mentoring remotely, and how to keep students motivated during this these conditions. Contact Karen via e-mail at havholkg@uwec.edu
  5. Other –Lissa Schneider-Rebozo is interested in writing up a piece on our August workshop to share with CUR. Scott Cooper shared it with the CUR Member Forum in August, but there may be other places, such as the Division blogs: http://curartsandhumanities.org/blog/
  6. Next meeting date – The next meeting is planned for early February; a meeting poll will be sent at the end of January.
