Joseph Lentz, “EMI Charaterization of Wide Band Gap Power Electronic Devices”
Mentor: Robert Cuzner, Electrical Engineering
When designing resilient micro grids you need ensure they will survive in the presence of malicious and non-malicious threats. In order to do this, you need to address several aspects of the micro grid such as its susceptibility, vulnerability and recover-ability in various configurations. With new wide band gap semiconductors that switch at much higher frequencies than what’s commercially available today in power electronic converters, a lot of EMI/EMC problems can be introduced. To characterize this EMI a custom EMI test bench has been built in the lab. This allows us to precisely characterize the EMI introduced by these devices to design an optimized filter that will meet current EMI/EMC standards.
