In the current political climate, non-binary and transgender populations have been specifically targeted through bills denying gender affirming care, dictating bathroom use, and more. This literature review seeks to show that with affirming and supportive policies for non-binary and transgender people, non-binary and transgender people will experience fewer instances of harassment and aggression and further, lower rates of suicidality and depression. Through a review of several studies, I was able to examine the substantial impacts that inclusive and affirming policy has on the mental health of transgender and non-binary individuals. These studies show that there is a positive correlation between affirming policy and improved mental health outcomes for non-binary and transgender individuals. This important research can be used to advocate for more inclusive policies in our state, in our city, and in our school. Non-binary and transgender people should have access to the resources that improve their quality of life – meaning there should not be oppressive policies banning their care, in addition, there should be anti-discrimination laws and policies that ensure they are able to thrive without fearing for their wellbeing.
