Manifesto(2024)
Manifesto 2024 is a series of works based on a philosophy of examining the dynamics and practices of the art world, spanning diverse media, including sculpture, performance, video, and installation. With each piece in the series, I employ an experimental approach that interrupts the boundaries between art and everyday life, providing the audience with opportunities for didactic reflection on social structures. Primarily using ready-made objects, I recontextualize familiar items, encouraging viewers to recognize that art is already embedded within their lives. My creative practice values direct, playful engagement with the audience, presenting contemporary art as an accessible and inviting exploration. Through this, art becomes an active medium that explores the social and philosophical dimensions of the audience beyond the mere objective of appreciation. This series raises questions about the role and responsibility of the artist in contemporary society, encouraging the audience to naturally engage in spaces of social dialogue and reflection. Each work embodies an active commitment to exploring the connections between society and art. Everyday experiences of life and art can be closely connected, and the work in Manifesto 2024 highlights the role of art as a powerful tool to induce social participation and dialogue.
Series Lineup/ Description of works
1. Clone is an interactive, mobile work that metaphorically expresses the communication challenges I experience within the community as a foreign artist. 2. Lesson from Pie metaphorically illustrates the impact of selfish individual rights on society, allowing the audience to reflect on the consequences of selfish acts and societal reactions through a gallery setting.
3. Wall Push Game is a video work depicting artists’ attempts to expand their own spaces. Through two participants licking and pushing a small chocolate wall, this work symbolizes the complex art world, where artists love the “sweetness” of art but are also constantly competing.
4. Spirit Mukbang uses Jeff Koons as a reference to satirize overproduction, self-replication, and commercialization, critiquing how these elements erode art’s unique “aura” and role. Through the concept of a YouTuber “eating” the artist’s spirit, this piece imagines the artist as unable to create meaningful work, criticizing excessive commercialization.
5. Vending Machine demonstrates the risks inherent in investing in contemporary art, likening it to gambling. As investors expect sweet returns, the actual outcomes remain uncertain, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the art world.
6. Balloon Release Ceremony symbolically represents the reality that confined gallery spaces obstruct artists’ dreams. Helium balloons inscribed with artists’ aspirations rise but are ultimately trapped by the ceiling, eventually drifting down, reflecting the limitations of achieving dreams within commercial gallery constraints.
