Artist Statement
The series “Teach a Man to Fish” is a collection of hand drawn postcards that document different aspects of Wisconsin fishing culture. Each postcard includes a fact about fishing in Wisconsin on the back of the card and a related black and white line art illustration on the front. Topics include information about the Wisconsin Walleye Wars, the Museum of Fresh Water Fishing, state record catches, and local fish identification. I use mark-making techniques such as hatching and stippling to create biologically accurate representations of Wisconsin fish and whimsical anthropomorphic characters with fish heads who are engaged in fishing-related activities.
