Artist Statement

Unbroken’ is a fabricated metal sculpture, which is made from sheets of mild steel, with an altered surface that has been sealed with a wipe on varnish. I want the patina to allude to the harsh reality of life’s wear-and-tear; subsequently, proving that nothing is safe against this test of time. Through the process of hand bending and forming I am able to get what is often referenced as a cold, stagnant material to move and turn on itself. This form slumps over from its upright position and reaches or “crawls” onto the floor; with this, I intend for the viewer to feel a sense of defeat or sadness. The implication that this piece has melted and slumped under pressure is meant to allude to the pressure and heaviness one might feel over the course of life. One can choose to keep moving forward just as this piece continues to reach out.
