How will our decisions affect the planet? A more pertinent question to ask may be: how will the planet affect our decisions? My work aims to integrate product design and sculpture to investigate the aesthetic potentials of bio-materials through wearable functional objects. More specifically, the work is an exploration of materiality through rethinking footwear and objects that when mass produced, have had a detrimental impact on both user and environment. Through a speculative approach, the work aims to explore how organic materials can lead to a completely new infrastructure of manufacturing, as well as produce goods that are compostable, rather than sit stagnant in a landfill. Mycelium, which is the vegetative part of fungi, supports an optimistic future as a bio-material. Mycelium’s potentials are endless, with its ability to cultivate into mold forms to produce durable and innovative composites. Many of these bio-materials are fueled from waste, and possess an infinite number of solutions for saving this planet. The work exemplifies this process through the creation of multiple footwear designs that showcase mycelium’s ability to take on the form of a shoe’s midsole, creating a completely new sustainable product.
