Комфортное Кресло, The Comfort Chair
My work explores the relationship between art and design through craft and utilitarian and ergonomic function. My project, Комфортное Кресло or The Comfort Chair, is a lounge chair meant for indoor and outdoor relaxation. The Comfort Chair is designed in the mid-century modern style and is comprised of thick red oak frames and a Baltic Birch plywood seat. The chair consists of two sets of sweeping frame rails fit to a base section and legs attached to the front of each frame to provide equal and ample support. The frames are then connected by two crossmembers on the floor portion of the base. The bases are constructed out of four pieces to provide maximum support, while the legs are cut out of one solid piece. They are all conjoined together through a puzzle-piece like design. The precision-cut live hinge seat consists of a zig-zag line pattern that allows for flexibility and for it to fasten to the sweeping curvature of the frame rails. The live hinge is divided into seven different sections to allow for ergonomic comfort in the more curved portions. The different sections of the live hinge are joined with filler pieces to create a look to make it appear as one continuous seat. At just over six feet long and nearly three feet wide, the user can rest comfortably on the chair, while being provided support for the legs and an ergonomic back rest.
