Artist Statement
ACID FLASH
ACID FLASH is a collection of tattoo-inspired paintings I’ve made using acrylic inks on paper. The subjects of the paintings are surrounded by decorative borders to give formal elaboration, elevating the subjects within the compositions and creating a sense of unity between the pieces.
My work features both representational and semi-abstract, biomorphic, compositions. I pull inspiration from a range of visual traditions, but most prominently from traditional tattoo designs. This can be seen through my use of bold lines, simplified forms, and choice of subject matter.
My representational work often depicts subjects found within Japanese and American Traditional tattoos, such as animals, plants, and skulls. My abstract paintings feature fluid, slime-like forms that weave together into dynamic designs reminiscent of neo-tribal and cybersygilsm.
I also explore the concept of combining multiple subjects into a unified design. I do this through merging two representational images as well as through using biomorphic forms to depict recognizable subjects. The intention behind my work is to create bold, vibrant designs that are unique but still pay homage to the rich visual traditions within tattooing.
