GAZE

Femininity’s meaning is as diverse as the individuals who define it. Historically reduced to a symbol of weakness, femininity embodies strength. GAZE is a photographic zine and portrait project that intertwin the intricate relationships individuals share with femininity with their unique gender identities. The large-scale individual portraits are reminiscent of fashion magazines, a platform that enforces beauty standards that often perpetuate negative stereotypes through retouching and body alterations. The zine flips the script, challenging these norms, serving as a visual rebellion that urges viewers to recognize the empowerment and resilience within their femininity, inviting them to embrace their identity. In navigating my personal journey through gender and womanhood, I’ve recently embraced she/they pronouns. While I still resonate with aspects of womanhood, there are facets where traditional labels don’t quite capture the entirety of my identity. What remains unwavering is the conviction that my identity belongs solely to me; it’s a fluid, unique mosaic that defies external classification. No one else possesses the right or authority to define or dictate my identity except for me. This principle extends universally — every individual holds the autonomy to shape and own their identity, free from external imposition.

GAZE is a call to ever-define — celebrating strength in the multiplicity of femininity. It’s a challenge to see beyond societal expectations and appreciate the beauty of embracing one’s true self. In GAZE, femininity is not just observed; it is felt, understood, and celebrated in all its glorious dimensions.
