Desire of Flora

Nature is something many look to for inspiration, peace of mind, and adventure. Those who love the natural world surround themselves with it whether by being outside, bringing botanicals inside the home, or owning things that visually reference the environment. By bringing these items of flora into a domestic space, we are creating our own outside environment inside the home and gaining a sense of comfort from it. We’re not only bringing in living plants as well as fake, but also creating and buying objects that display designs which resemble and replicate parts of nature. Within this urge to surround ourselves with nature, we bring in growing life and replicas of this greenery into our white-walled spaces.

Desire of Flora examines our relationship with the natural world by capturing evidence of a mutually beneficial arrangement found in our homes. I explored my own space and the homes of others to observe these unique relationships. In addition to capturing those hints of nature, I also reveal the personal narratives of those who inhabit these environs through plants they procure, and objects juxtaposed. While the desire to have nature in one’s home is not unusual, the manifestations of it are varied. Regardless of the representation, having flora in the home brings us the peace of mind, adventure, and inspiration that we long for and obtain from the world outside.
