Splintered Ends

Splintered Ends is a story about two siblings: Cecil and Eren. They’re two halves of one whole, a pencil to be exact. Brought to life by The Wizard, a magical being that makes spells through writing. The Wizard writes spells with a wooden pencil, which through excessive usage breaks. Here is where they became two separate beings, no longer one pencil, but two. They and the other objects in the house were brought to life by the magical out-lash The Wizards’ death brought.  The Wizards’ death, and how they came to consciousness, is unknown to those in the house. This is where Cecil and Eren’s journey begins.

Splintered Ends is a tale about two siblings trying to become one again, but through time apart they realize that they don’t need to. They can be their own person and don’t need to be dependent on the other. This is learned when the bird, Kyros, separates the two wooden siblings from each other. Cecil believes Eren has died in the attack and must learn to live without them by their side. Whereas Eren believes they were left behind, forgotten, and abandoned, and thus is fueled by anger to become someone different, someone stronger.

As the artist of these characters and this story, I chose to represent it in a variety of mediums. From digital art, screenprinting, and ceramics; I chose to have my showcase this way due to the scope I see this project heading in. The ceramics and the sculptural elements are to show the audience the scale of their world, to emerge them into the world that much more. Digital painting is my preferred medium and as such I wanted to show as many scenarios as possible. Finally, we have screenprinting to show the illustrative quality of this work and how it might look in a graphic novel/comic format.
