Artist Statement

Brown Femme

In my senior thesis, Brown Femme, I work with digital paintings in two different printed formats. One is a sticker doll series, and the other is a poster anthology series. Both focus on experiences of black women in predominantly white spaces, and the intersectionality of identities.

In the poster series, I illustrate feelings and experiences of black women confronting racism in their day-to-day encounters in a fantastical or stylized manner. These depictions represent memories, learned lessons, and hopes, which I interpret into works of art that aim to give black women a platform and turn their pain into something beautiful.

In my sticker doll series, I challenge the masculinization of black women by depicting hyper femme and fashionable black women in all shapes and shades of brown to be seen as icons of beauty. In the future, I hope to turn the anthology posters and stories into a book and use my art to diversify and offer broader representations that I wanted/needed to see as a child to the new generation.
