Artist Statement

Strands of LEDs come together to create a media that works with the inclusion of microcomputers and sensors. Fueled by the participant’s heartbeat, the strips reflect the viewer’s pulse back to them in a digitalized form through various brightness levels. A proximity sensor is also used to turn the installation on through physical presence within the space.    By taking a direct reading from the tip of the finger and displaying it in a visual format, it is made obvious that the heartbeat you are seeing is yours. This is my idea of what it is to be alive, to be present, to breathe. Without a heartbeat the human body would cease to exist, to survive. I wanted to highlight this. The lights are not just a simple heartbeat reading, they are a reminder. A reminder that you have come this far, survived this long, and made it to this point.
