Artist Statement

My work focuses on merging surrealism and abstract elements. Taking a recognizable image and pushing it past its normal viewing points is an idea that captivates me and something I incorporate into my designs. Art has always been a way of expressing new thoughts and ideas and remains a source of the imagination. Just like us as humans, art never stops growing. Being able to take an idea and grow it into something completely new and unseen is a challenge and concept I enjoy working with. As a graphic designer, I incorporate those creative and surrealistic elements into designing logos and helping people brand themselves in a professional yet personal sense. Helping someone find a creative and unique way of branding themselves to stand out and reflect who they are is what I strive to accomplish. I find that exploring the subconscious of an individual and finding those key elements of what makes someone who they are is a critical step in creating a brand and design for them. My most recent piece, titled Mental Friction, deals with just that.

Mental Friction is a piece where I have explored my own subconscious and pinpointed certain emotions, imagery, styles, and elements that I tend to use throughout my work. The imagery used are all elements that, as an artist, define who I am. I also researched color theory and how certain colors effect our mind and the neurological reactions we have to them. Throughout my research, I found that black and white images allow for the brain to focus on designs better and it avoids sensory overload. My final design encompasses all of those elements and is a reflection of myself as an artist and my subconscious. This piece has helped me gather a better understanding of how I operate and key ideas and elements that I enjoy using and where I pull those from. Not only have I grown and learned to understand myself as an artist, but this project also allowed me to do so on a personal level. To compare our current self to our past self, we see major changes. But to understand those changes is a whole other level of exploration. Exploring the subconscious is the perfect way to do so.
