Awakening the Waterfront is a visual report that combines elements of design and visual communication with digital photography into one cohesive story of Milwaukee’s inner harbor, the Harbor District. The project has been created for the local non-profit organization, the Harbor District, Inc. whose mission is to revitalize Milwaukee’s waterfront environmentally, economically, and socially for future generations. An illustrated timeline guides the viewer through the unique history of the Harbor District; respecting the past, recognizing current efforts and embracing innovative plans for the future. Design elements of the report are emblematic of the harbor district; referencing water, industry and a sense of rebirth. A color palette of blue and orange have been chosen strategically to resemble Milwaukee’s geographic location along Lake Michigan and its unique history as a rust belt city. A photo catalog has been created to accompany the report, visually depicting the story of revival. Awakening the Waterfront is designed to be a bilingual document that combines Spanish and English speakers, celebrating the many cultures and traditions that make the Harbor District a special place.
