Artist Statement
Did he call today? is an installation in which I explore rebuilding my relationship with my youngest brother. The copper bars on the acrylic rectangular bases mark the 9 years my brother has been sentenced to, with black disks cut from cellphone cases on the first three bars representing time served and memories shared over the phone. The other six bars with white disks indicate the unknown future. The second acrylic sheet contains a vinyl sticker of audio waves behind the nine copper bars. This audio is a snippet from a recorded phone call between my brother and mother. Knowing he called her gives me a sense of relief that he is doing alright. The smaller acrylic squares are laser cut audio waves of my own voice of things I wish I said as an older sister, as I attempt to reconnect/rebuild a relationship with my brother over the phone.
