Growing and Thriving
In order for a plant to flourish indoors, it must be provided with an appropriate amount of attention and care. When that attention and care is not provided, the plant is doomed to wither and will eventually perish without intervention. The same is true for people; one cannot truly succeed in unsuitable conditions. Growing and Thriving is a series of photographic self-portraits in which I explore the symbiotic relationship I share with my house plants. I have over 100 plants in my apartment, and have found that when I neglect myself, my plants suffer as a result. My interest in plants developed during a time when I felt I had very little control over my life, I was feeling stagnant and overwhelmed by my environment. I started collecting a variety of different plants, and I began to find solace in the distraction they provided. I found quiet gratification in the silence of growth, and a profound sense of satisfaction in my successes. The stability I was now required to provide for my plants was grounding. I have grown alongside my garden, and have learned many lessons from my plants. Keeping houseplants has allowed me to practice mindfulness, as my curated environment will suffer if I allow myself to neglect it. They have shown me the importance of routine and self-care, and how without them, I cannot and will not thrive.
