Artist Statement
Serendipia is a personal documentation about my mom. When she was growing up, she never felt like she needed anything, now she feels like she has everything. As a young Mexican girl in Chicago, all she knew was her relationship with her mom and their everyday routines. She has instilled what she learned then in her life today, and I have begun to navigate these lessons as they have now become a part of me. The journey of these photographs evolved into me finding more of my own identity, as well as that of my mom. These images speak to moments, locations, and actions specific to her and our family. Giving myself over to the documentation process to find more of why I am who I am and why she is who she is, has been nothing short of beautiful. This series touches on personal and cultural identity, as well as progression, generations, lessons, and serendipity.
