Disturbed Water
Disturbed Water is a series of cyanotype collages and handwritten text that invites the viewer to embrace our innate connection with water. Immersion within water provides the ability for our bodies to move in an environment where we aren’t constricted to gravity the same way we are on land. Our senses change, our vision narrows, our ears are unable to hear anything, and time is suspended. This awareness provides a moment of solace and escape from the fast-paced nature of our lives. Using an underwater film camera, these images were taken over my final season as a competitive swimmer. My perspective on our interaction within water has warped through looking in the lens of a camera, I began to have the perspective of an artist as opposed to an athlete. This different view allowed me to appreciate the environment and feel more present within the water’s embrace. As this project involved my teammates, I gathered their handwritten notes and incorporated them alongside the collages. As much as this experience is my own, it is shared with others also. This project was not possible without the help of the Milwaukee Swim team, thank you for allowing me to be a creator and an athlete.
