Artist Statement

Against Time and Self 

The following works cover the story of a non-binary detective named Dakota and his adventures with a particular alien named Test. Along the journey, Dakota battles against the pressure of time and the monster it created. Dakota also meets with other characters such as Darius, a co-worker of Dakota, who faces similar hardships of identity. The works will consist primarily of traditional sketch illustrations and comic pages drawn with graphite. The figures will be drawn on 18×24 paper to convey a sense of focus and connection to the characters. Drawing plus-sized, Black, and trans characters enjoying their bodies while maneuvering ways to unlearn bad habits is something I want to express to others, from personal and shared experiences. The vulnerability of presenting yourself as a non-binary masc person can result in different reactions, even in communities you deem safe. Alongside stereotypes are biases towards certain subjects and people and I want to allow people to overcome their previous opinions and perceive a new perspective.
