Artist Statement
I associate the color blue with open spaces, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity—everything having to do with my childhood home. It is a space where I go to recollect myself, where I find new inspiration, but it is also a space to which I do not always want to return. For the body, the color blue is supposed to be calming, can invoke rest, and can help balance self-expression. To me blue is neither a happy nor a sad color, but it instead evokes an in-between experience, both emotions simultaneously. In the work, color functions as a metaphor for my emotional response to visiting my childhood home. Through capturing photographs of where I grew up, I deepen my connection to the place and my family who still live there, while offering a wider audience a glimpse into this rural environment.
