Artist Statement

I have created a dollhouse form filled with moments and rooms from throughout my life that whether good or bad, I wanted to process and look critically at. Each room tells its own story, but they are all a part of the same home. It’s an interactive house with layers to peek into and explore. Moving around the pieces allows the viewer to see new angles and moments throughout and gain more insight into each scene. A dollhouse has notions of childhood, joy, and playfulness. It is meant to be a place for play and imagination, but often they also show deeper feelings in the scenes shown in them. Through this dollhouse I am exploring moments and feelings that are still trapped in the moment of impact.

There is a reason why I held on to these experiences and in putting them together I can see how they interlock and find commonality. I want to process and grow through these times in my life to find how I got where I am now as I approach graduation. Life is a collection of moments and this has become my way of peering into them and letting others in to do the same. This process of collecting moments and viewing them is lead by psychological ideas and research related to growth through moments and trauma. My goal in research is to see other examples of folks using art as a tools for individual, group, or community healing as well as find what the process of healing looks like through them. I hope through all of this to show an example of growth and catharsis so that others can reflect and decide to process their own experiences. It is a process of healing and leaving stagnation that can support future growth.
