Artist Statement

We are constantly moving. Moving: away, to, closer, further, apart, together, alone. Humans are in constant motion, yet our minds can take an assortment of broken, distorted impressions and fabricate an image of a complete environment. These transitional spaces can be easily passed by, unless the individual is willing to take in the present moment while in their state of movement. As I push and roll around the city on my skateboard, letting momentum carry me, I capture these moments and locations on an iPhone with the panorama feature to achieve in-camera distortions, fracturing space over time.

The objective of photography has always been the same: to capture the moment. The evolution of digital photography has not only changed where photos are stored but has also altered what images mean to us. People now have a camera always with them, which makes snapping a photo that much easier to do. It’s definitely a go-to for most in today’s world to want to “capture the moment”, but in reality, they are dampening that memory by doing so and giving up being in the moment.

The images in Echoes capture my personal experiences as the events are happening. Viewing these images elicits memories associated with the locations, while the illustrations explore associations from the distorted documentation. I build upon these stories from the past to create something new to experience in the present moment.
