Artist Statement

Glimpsed Totality

 My series, Glimpsed Totality, is an expressive display of oil portraiture, utilizing distortion through layering multiple sequential images of one subject on a single surface. By intertwining multiple instances of time into a single image, it communicates the figure’s autonomy and agency, portraying them as they exist through space, rather than as a static depiction. Each image is stacked in a single space creating interactions between the layers that simultaneously reveal and obscure information as they meld together.   I enjoy achieving this layering through indirect painting techniques. Often relying on multiple applications of thinned oil paint to control color and transparency. The isochronous layering serves to resist the statuesque weightiness of traditional portraiture; the subject not sitting still to be captured but breathing through a space regardless of the camera’s presence or the artist’s hand.
