Artist Statement

In my series Mental Spaces, I create photographs of fabricated, imaginary interior architectural spaces to portray my own experiences with mental disorders and illnesses. Through the use of various construction materials, props, and lighting conditions, I control the feeling of each image to communicate the ways in which I personally experience each topic. In each photographed interior, a piece of furniture represents the human occupant of the space. These pieces of furniture suggest that these spaces are large enough that the viewer could actually step inside of them. The inclusion of furniture helps to establish a sense of familiarity in these otherwise uncanny spaces. In addition to my own connection to the pieces, the artwork encourages the viewer to associate their own personal experiences with the images. These photographs establish a dialogue about mental illness and ask the audience to think about the ways that mental disorders affect each individual differently.
