Artist Statement

Taking apart bits and pieces from human bodily sources and reassembling them into beings that no longer resemble their source, I mold new life. These amalgamations of skin and flesh exist suspended in various states of being, some ambiguous region between life and death, pinned up for observation. Though there are elements of recognition and familiarity in the final form, they are left unidentifiable and are ultimately uncanny.  Charcoal is my primary medium, one with an inherent weight and visual presence, and with it my drawing process is instinctive and intuitive. I use my hands to move the charcoal, leaving traces of myself along the paper’s surface as a reminder of the horrific ways in which human bodies have always been treated – a reality that has become commonplace in the world. I invite the viewer to sit with and experience a discomfort that people have become immune to in a time of persistent confusion, fear, and destruction.
