Artist Statement
Decoctionisa series investigating cameraless photography techniques and concepts of self portraiture, expressing actions, thoughts, and feelings though the paper. In Decoction, I manipulate darkroom photo paper by burning, scratching, and other alternative methods, sometimes leaving behind fingerprints and bodily fluids, discovering ways for the material to capture things other than light. This body of work is a collection of experiences mediated by moments of serendipity, letting the paper take its course — exploring what else photography can do outside its’ barest point, rejecting the paper’s s default settings and bypassing its’ manufactures recommendations to create my own procedures. This body of work uses rudiment concepts of photography such as the recording of time, composition, aesthetics, and subject matter.
