Artist Statement

SELF

My current body of work is a series of self-portraits in oil that represent the many different aspects of seeing myself, both as an artist and as a person. I consider a self-portrait to be one of the most important things an artist can create. Not only is it a physical depiction of the artist’s physical likeness, it also serves as a view into their deeper persona, delving into themes of identity, vulnerability, and self-awareness.

This series centers on variety and perception. With each piece, I am painting myself in a different way in order to speak to the tension between how I see myself and how I am perceived by those around me. Many of these paintings utilize unconventional views and situations where I still remain the subject in one way or another. Some are presented as more “traditional” self-portraits, while others may not even feature a face (or a figure) at all. In seeing me through these various lenses, my hope is that viewers will also catch a glimpse of themselves.
