Artist Statement
I make art and designs to communicate joy and make people happy by showing my thoughts and feelings without words. It is a challenge, but my unique digital paintings and short videos are powerful and communicate important messages without stereotypes.
My work is about broken beauty and is based on cultural standards of beauty. I think about this topic a lot. I used to follow beauty standards as portrayed in Korean media and around the world. I tried so hard to meet expectations, but never fit in. Instead, I always heard comments about what I was missing from a lot of people. But, at some point, I gave up following and caring about others’ expectations, and now I do whatever I want. I’m opposite of the Korean beauty standard. It was so hard to receive people’s opinions, and I feel way better than when I was concerned about their views.
I want to tell you that no one needs to get stressed because they can’t fit in with beauty standards. In my digital works, I use the top 100 most beautiful women’s faces from most beautiful women in the world, however, no one thinks the subjects are beautiful even though individual parts match cultural expectations. That’s what I want to show people, that everyone possesses beauty and each part of the face is beautiful.
