Artist Statement

The world is built of shapes and as people, we find patterns in everything we see; therefore, creating a variety of perceptions and feelings in our mindset. Observations of the world around me has really been a guide when creating this set of illustrations based on the main families of shapes. The thought of how the perspective and feelings of a piece can change by the basis of which family of shapes is most prominently showcased in an art piece or style. While certain shapes give people a sense of reliability and security, others can make people feel energized and cautious. I am presenting these differences through a set of digital illustrations with the base subject of an old, battered barn that is near falling apart.

I started with a basic sketch and debated on which illustrations would include lines within their structure. In order for the audience to be drawn more to the composition and shapes, I painted this digitally in a gray scale, to lessen the distraction of color. Alongside natural observations in my environment, I have often been inspired by shapes in others’ art styles. Artists such as Yaraslava Apollonova, Ross Tran Loish, and Sophie Gallo are all really big inspirations for my thought process, as each of them have fascinating art styles, especially without how they rely on certain families of shapes within their works.
