Artist Statement

The work I have created as my capstone project addresses the disconnect between craft and concept, bringing them together as one. My piece utilizes the CAD process to create a hand sculpted work, acting as a guide for the creation process. The sculpture utilizes organic forms, modeled in a digitally controlled environment, then hand cut and assembled. The original thought was to further solidify the concept that these organic forms can be crafted within controlled environments by using a machine to cut the forms, which I have done with past pieces that define the overarching theme in my artwork. Within this piece I confront the age old argument of craft and concept and gatekeeping within the art department; how classic studio art sees artists who utilize process as part of artwork. The even larger concept this piece encompasses is what influences create these biases in our society. Through this sculpture, I work to understand my purpose in art and break the cycle of doubt.
