Artist Statement

Fusion explores the relationship between ceramics and mild steel when used together in different formats. These formats: wearables and small-scale sculptural objects, allow me to elicit different responses from the same material interaction. I aim to challenge the traditional hierarchy of material value; the goal being to make my audience question and subvert how we traditionally use materials. Steel is viewed as a medium based in industry, and functional ceramic objects are based in craft. I use steel to reference industry and labor to allude to my experience coming from a blue-collar family. Clay allows me to break away my family’s history of working in the industry sector. My hope is for the viewer to question which material has more value in the sense of necessity, longevity, and application. The material interactions are also meant to pose the question about the effect of exposing a material to a new environment and how that may relate to our experiences. I choose to reference traditional ceramic forms because people see this material as a craft material and know what to expect from it. I choose making wearables because jewelry is inherently precious. Asserting clay and steel into the work aims to question what we want to place our value in.
